Just the Facts

The New Detroit Science Center features 110,000 square feet of scientific exploration, including Michigan's only IMAX® Dome Theatre; the Dassault Systèmes Planetarium; the Ford Learning Resource Center; the DTE Energy Sparks Theater; the DaimlerChrysler Science Stage; an 8,700 square-foot Science Hall for traveling exhibits; five exhibit laboratories - General Motors Motion Laboratory, Dow Foundation Life Sciences Laboratory, Waves & Vibrations Laboratory, Matter & Energy Laboratory and SBC Children's Gallery; and a Special Events Lobby. In July 2001, the Science Center completed a $30 million renovation and expansion. It served more than 755,000 visitors in the first 22 months of operations.

Location
The New Detroit Science Center is located in the University Cultural Center at the corner of John R Street and Warren Avenue at 5020 John R Street, Detroit MI 48202.

The New Detroit Science Center is accessible from I-75, M-10 and I-94.

Hours
Monday - Friday 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Saturday - Sunday 10:30 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.

Admission
General admission prices for non-members are:
Adults, $7
Seniors, $6 (60+)
Children, $6 (2-12)
Children, FREE (Under 2)

$4 additional charge for IMAX® Dome Theatre or Dassault Systèmes Planetarium shows.

Parking
Parking is available in The New Detroit Science Center Lot for $5 a visit. The lot is located on the corner of Farnsworth and John R Street.

Membership
Members of The New Detroit Science Center receive FREE admission to permanent exhibit areas, free or discounted admission to the IMAX® Dome Theatre and Dassault Systèmes Planetarium, a free subscription to the Science Center's newsletter, a 10 percent Science Store discount, invitations to members-only events, free or reduced admission at over 200 ASTC science museums worldwide and much more. Annual membership levels include:

  • Student/Senior, $30
    Membership benefits for one named student or one senior citizen 60 years or older with valid I.D.

  • Individual PLUS, $60
    Member benefits for one adult plus one guest

  • Grandparents, $70
    Member benefits for up to two grandparents and all grandchildren under age 18

  • Family, $75
    Member benefits for two adults and all children under age 18

  • Family PLUS, $95
    Family member benefits plus two guests

  • Premium, $175
    Family plus member benefits with FREE, unlimited admission to all attractions
Corporate memberships are available.

Attractions
The New Detroit Science Center features many exciting attractions to delight and inspire children's curiosity and interest in science. The Science Center and all attractions are handicap accessible. Permanent attractions include:

  • The General Motors Motion Laboratory houses more than 30 exhibits, including the DaimlerChrysler Science Stage, which address classical mechanics and compare motion, speed and direction. The Science Center collaborated with the Society of Automotive Engineers to design this area.

  • The Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow Foundation Life Science Laboratory features exhibits that focus on the similarities between the rainforest and city ecosystems.

  • The Matter and Energy Laboratory is home to more than 30 exhibits, including the DTE Energy Sparks Theater, which explores the fundamental principles of electricity and magnetism, energy conversion, and the property of matter.

  • The SBC Children's Gallery features seven exhibits areas that offer an opportunity for young children to develop social and motor skills through an interest in science as play.

  • The Waves and Vibrations Laboratory explores an immense range of wave phenomena, offering an awe-inspiring glimpse at the everyday world of light and sound.

  • The Ford Learning Resource Center houses five unique learning environments with hands-on, inquiry-based learning, professional development opportunities, educational resources and classroom curriculum advancement.

  • The IMAX® Dome Theatre offers state-of-the-art technology for an unforgettable cinematic experience.

  • The Dassault Systèmes Planetarium features spectacular virtual reality journeys that take the audience through the rings of Saturn, into a black hole or anywhere in the universe.

  • The Science Hall is a temporary home to many exhibits, including Beakman's World on Tour, which debuted at the Science Center during its grand opening celebration.

Michigan Curriculum
Exhibits at The New Detroit Science Center are closely aligned with the State of Michigan Curriculum Framework for Science Education and support MEAP test achievement.
